Ecuador

Travel tips, articles and links for Ecuador

Ecuador is Spanish for equator, thus named because the country is on the equator. It is a combination of low-lying coastal plain and a very mountainous interior, where the Andes tower up to around 21000 feet. In the eastern part of Ecuador, forested lowlands form part of the Amazon basin. These variations of terrain give Ecuador great diversity of climate.
The coast is always hot and humid with a rainy season between December and April. An almost perpetual and pleasant Spring-like climate exists in the middle range of altitudes on the Andean slopes but at higher altitudes, cool conditions prevail with snow almost a permanent feature of the highest peaks.
