Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is very popular Caribbean holiday destination. The Spanish speaking country occupies two thirds of the Caribbean's second largest island - Hispaniola. Haiti covers the remaining third.
The interior of Hispaniola is very mountainous, rising to 10,000 feet around the Haiti-Dominican border. This creates a very wet tropical climate but the Dominican Republic's coast is much drier; even in the rainy season which lasts from late May to the end of October.
For the best of sunny beach holidays, head for the Dominican Republic's south coast as this is generally drier and sunnier than the north coast. However, both coasts offer fabulous beaches as well as very well appointed tourist resorts.
